Yes, I'm a budget drinker. When I see "gold winner" and "Best of Class" awards on a wine that is under 7 bucks, I tend to notice. I tried the Rex Goliath Cab a while back and really enjoyed the flavor profile, so this time I went for the Shiraz of the same label. Rex Goliath hails from California and the flavor is described as "plummy" and "peppery." I'm already starting to water at the mouth, so how does this cheap wine stack up?
This is not a complex wine by any means, the mouth feel is defined but not what I would call full. I'm getting a bit of spice on the nose, mainly pepper and plum. The taste is of black pepper with some nice cranberry/raspberry in the middle; This is most certainly a fruit forward type of wine. The spiciness lingers a bit on the finish and the flavor disintegrates almost immediately, but that's quite ok, I'll have another sip. But please oh please Be careful, this stuff is so tasty, you might wake up in the coop with His Royal Majesty (see the picture to the left)
This paired well with my red sauce pasta dish and would probably compliment a variety of dishes. I would call this Shiraz a value and an absolute essential budget buy. I'm really excited to sample some more varieties of the big chicken, stay tuned - Cheers!
